Unit 4 – Mamie

01 The first girl I ever noticed in what, later, I recognized as a sentimental emotion was called Mamie. She was the daughter of a truck driver in my father¡¯s chemical factory. 1) We used to play 2) in the large factory yard, where hundreds of barrels of resin 3) were stored on end, 4) and it was great fun to jump from barrel top to barrel top. Mamie had a brother who became a bosom friend, 5) and games of tag 6) on the barrels were organized in which Mamie ¡ª being several years younger ¡ª was patronizingly 7) allowed to participate. She and her brother were sweet children, amiable and gentle, 8) and I loved them both very dearly. 9) Their lives were hard. At twelve and ten respectively, 10) they were called upon 11) for severe domestic service, 12) and their poor mother ¡ª a stout, 13) red-faced woman ¡ª kind enough when she was sober,14) was less so when drunk. Their happy moments were the ones they spent with me, playing on the barrels; but when I went back to my play-room to have my feet dried and to be fed my supper, they went back to a little frame house 15) where dirt, noise, unmerited abuse, 16) and frugal tolerance 17) were their lot. 18)
